Punched PC in face

7:50am Thursday 4th September 2008

A DRUNK Droitwich man punched and kicked a policeman in the face before he tried to hang himself in a prison cell, a court heard.

Spencer Craig also ripped a police sergeant’s trousers while a number of officers tried to restrain him in his cell.

The 27-year-old, of Singer Hill, Chawson, admitted two charges of assaulting police officers in the execution of their duty, another of being drunk and disorderly in a public place, and also causing criminal damage when he appeared before Worcester’s magistrates.

Mark Johnson, prosecuting, said police were called after Craig was seen being drunk and disorderly in Droitwich High Street at about 6.30pm on Tuesday, August 12.

Mr Johnson said that while Craig was being arrested he swore at a police officer and then became extremely agitated while he was in the police car.

“He punched the PC in the face, causing pain,” he said.

Mr Johnson said Craig was forced into the back seat of the car.

He said it was from there Craig then kicked the police officer in the face. The officer then had to call for back-up and Craig was taken into custody.

Mr Johnson added: “When he was in the cell they noticed the gentleman was using a cord to try and harm himself.”

Mr Johnson said police and civil officers tried to restrain Craig and stop him wrapping the cord around his neck.

Mr Johnson said it was during this melee that Craig grabbed a police sergeant’s inside leg and ripped his trouser pocket causing £8.53 damage.

In mitigation, Mark Sheward said his client suffered with mental health problems and generalised anxiety disorder, which he is on medication for, but added he often supplements that with alcohol.

Mr Sheward said the injuries the police officers sustained were minor.

Magistrates ordered a full pre-sentence report, along with medical and psychiatric reports, to be prepared for when they sentence Craig on Wednesday, October 8. Craig has been released on conditional bail until that date.
